June LoweEngineer of the Future Trust

A first in Canada, The Engineer of the Future Trust will provide a pool of discretionary funding used by the Dean for tuition support, bridge financing and micro-seed funding for budding entrepreneurs at Waterloo Engineering.

Our students are driven to succeed, with a strong entrepreneurial tenacity and an innate desire to make a difference in the world. The Engineer of the Future Trust addresses the challenge to incubate student success in a fast evolving global economy. Our students can pivot faster with fewer entanglements – if they have the resources.

The Engineer of the Future Trust (EFT) provides the Dean with flexible, short turnaround funding to leverage world-changing ideas in a proven incubation hub. In addition to much needed tuition support and bridge financing, The EFT may be disbursed to assist students with their Capstone design projects – moving ideas from concept to full scale prototype, and it may be accessed by Waterloo Engineering student teams who are competing for international prizes.  The key is that the fund can be used to move viable business projects forward without undue delay and for maximum market impact when the timing counts.

Eligible Projects:

  • The development of 4th year Capstone design projects into viable businesses;
  • Offsetting the cost of tuition after an unpaid co-op term to support creation of a business plan and prototype;
  • Taking prototypes from lab to market (including materials, labour and commercialization costs including patents and trademarks);
  • Travel expenses for student teams to attend international student competitions and exchanges
